Recently, Sir Anton Muscatelli, who is the President of the University of Glasgow, was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree by Nankai University. The Awarding Ceremony was held at the Balitai Campus. With the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, President Prof. Chen Yulu, on behalf of Nankai University, conferred the honorary doctoral degree to Prof.Anton Muscatelli and jointly unveiled the plaque for the Joint Research Center of the two universities. Rachel Sandison, the Vice President of Glasgow University, and Prof. Chen Jun, an Academician of the CAS Member and Vice President of Nankai University, also attended this event. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Zhu Shoufei, who is also the Vice President of Nankai University.
Sir Anton Muscatelli is a world-renowned economist, educator, and practitioner who serves for communication between China and the U.K. He has profound academic achievements in the areas of monetary policy, fiscal policy, and international finance, and he has made significant positive contributions to higher education cooperation and cultural exchanges between China and the UK.
Anton Muscatelli received his degree certificate from Chen Yulu, becoming the 11th Honorary Doctor holder of Nankai University. The former recipients include former Singaporean President Chen Qingyan and French Constitutional Council Chairman Laurent Fabius.
Chen Yulu congratulated Anton Muscatelli and expressed sincere gratitude for his unremitting efforts in deepening exchanges and cooperation between the two universities and promoting cultural exchanges between China and the UK. He reviewed the achievements of cooperation between Nankai University and the University of Glasgow over the years and looked forward to the two universities continuing to work hand in hand in the future, contributing more wisdom and strength to promote global education reform, world technology and civilization development.
To further develop high-level talent cultivation and scientific research, Nankai University and the University of Glasgow have decided to establish a joint research centre. Under the joint witness of nearly 300 teachers and students, Chen Yulu, Anton Muscatelli, Rachel Sanderson, and Chen Jun jointly unveiled the plaque for the Nankai University Glasgow University Joint Research Center, marking a new stage of strategic significance for the cooperation between the two universities.
Chen Jun introduced the basic situation of the Joint Research Center. He stated that the establishment of the Nankai University Glasgow University Joint Research Center is a strong alliance with complementary advantages and mutual benefits, and also a vivid manifestation of the solid promotion and high-end layout of cooperation between the two universities. Nankai University will take the establishment of the Joint Research Center as an opportunity to work together with the University of Glasgow to further face the international forefront of science and technology and major national strategic needs, create a high-level cooperation platform, and carry out innovative explorations in advantageous disciplines, sustainable development, global science and technology governance, and strive to contribute the wisdom and strength of the two universities to Sino British education, science and technology, and cultural exchanges.
Anton Muscatelli thanked Nankai University for awarding him an honorary doctoral degree and expressed his expectations for future cooperation. At the Nankai University Foreign Experts Lecture Hall, Anton Muscatelli shared with Nankai teachers and students the methods and measures of Glasgow University in enhancing social influence under the theme of Measuring the Social Impact of Universities. Chen Jun presented the keynote speaker certificate to Anton Muscatelli.
The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 and is a prestigious British university. It is a founding member of the Russell Group and 'organization Universitas 21 Universities. In 2008, Nankai University and the University of Glasgow established a friendly cooperative relationship, actively creating a collaborative model of cross-project integration and innovative development, and carrying out comprehensive cooperation including teacher-student exchanges, joint training, cooperative education, joint scientific research, and co-construction of Confucius Institutes. In 2015, the Nankai University Glasgow University Joint Graduate School was established, which is the first joint graduate school of the UK in China. It has trained nearly 700 outstanding talents with professional knowledge, composite abilities, and global perspectives to date. For over a decade, the two universities have become a model of higher education cooperation between China and the UK.
